Beginning a case that involves domestic relations can be a scary time. Emotions are flowing and you may feel that you have no control over your own family. That is why choosing the right attorney is the most important decision that you can make when going through any type of family law case. There are many attorneys in Georgia to choose from and it can be difficult to know which firm is going to represent your interests, protect your rights and the rights of any children involved, as well as achieve the goals that you have in mind. Thus, you will need to carefully consider all aspects of the attorney-client relationship as well as the attorney’s skills, background, and the services that the firm can provide.
Referrals
A referral is the best place to start on your search for any attorney and especially one in the family law field. Therefore, you should ask people you know if they or even someone else they know were involved in a family law case. If they feel comfortable enough, be sure to ask what type of case they were involved in. This will allow you to predict any similarities with your own case. Next, you will want to ask about their client-attorney relationship. Were there any disagreements throughout the process? Were all of their questions answered in a timely manner? Did they feel comfortable turning to the attorney in a time of need? Was their outcome successful? You may even contact people who regularly interact with attorneys such as psychotherapists, accountants, members of the clergy, and even other attorneys. These people, though they were not clients, can tell you their opinions on the attorney with whom they have experience.
Research
Referrals are a great place to start, but that should not be where your search ends. You should still conduct your own research on right attorney for you and your case. Visit the firm’s website and read the descriptions of the attorneys. This will help you get a sense of specialties, education, certifications, and even organizations that they are members of.
Interview
This is where all of your previous work comes together. Here you can meet with the firm and specifically the attorney or team that will be handling your case. It is your chance to ask any remaining questions that you may have as well as get a feel for the relationship. As your attorney will be the strongest advocate for you, he or she should be someone you feel comfortable working with. You will be able to get a deeper sense into their personality, behavior, attitude, and perhaps even views on your case.
